El Teleferico

Several weeks ago, my friend Amit and I took Quito's Teleferico, a cable car that carries you up the eastern side of the Pichincha Volcano. The ride ends at 13,000 feet, and from there you can hike even further up. The view is stunning. There are also herds of llamas, which I got friendly with, as well as horses to ride. Even walking about is hard because the air is so thin, but it is also cold and clean. Quito's province takes its name from the volcano whose two highest peaks are two Guagua (15,696 feet), which means "child" in the Andean indigenous language of Quechua, and Rucu (15, 413 feet), which means "old person." The volcano is still active and last erupted in 1999 when it dropped several inches of ash over the city. It is a special place for Quitenos.
